The "Wheels of Safety" video, produced by the Bismarck Wheelchair Safety Council and the NDDOT, uses a common sense approach to the potentially dangerous situations a wheelchair user may encounter as they travel. Our goal for the video is to prevent injuries and save lives.
When looking at the problem of wheelchair users as pedestrians, we found a glaring void in educational material. Everywhere we looked for information on how to train wheelchair users to be safe pedestrians we found that no information existed. The "Wheels of Safety" video is an attempt to fill this void.
This video has been reviewed by traffic safety professionals, by law enforcement, and most importantly it has been reviewed by wheelchair users.
All the demonstrations used in this video are performed by wheelchair users.
The Video demonstrates how to:
- Look for Traffic
- Travel at night
- Travel in pairs
- Be seen in traffic
- Use traffic signals
- Cross a railroad track
- Equip your wheelchair
- Adapt to your environment
- Travel where no sidewalks exist
- Cross a street with a curb cut
- Cross without a curb cut
